Is Your Driving Instructor Qualified

When you start learning to drive, you want to know that the person sitting beside you is properly trained, approved, and qualified to teach you safely and confidently. But did you know that not every driving instructor on the road is displaying the badge that proves their qualification?

At Geoff Capes Driving School, we believe every learner deserves complete confidence in their instructor — and that starts with knowing what those badges mean and why they matter.

What the Green and Pink Badges Mean

All approved driving instructors (ADIs) and trainee instructors (PDIs) are required by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) to display a badge in their car while teaching.

  • 🟢 Green Badge: This shows your instructor is a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). They’ve completed all the necessary training and passed rigorous DVSA tests in both theory and practical instruction.

  • 🌸 Pink Badge: This is issued to a trainee instructor (PDI) who is partway through their training. They’re gaining experience under supervision and have permission to teach while preparing for their final qualifying exams.

Both badges are official proof that your instructor is registered with the DVSA — and both should always be clearly displayed in the windscreen during lessons.

Why You Should Always Check for the Badge

Unfortunately, some instructors fail to display their badges — and in rare cases, unqualified individuals may offer driving lessons without proper registration. That’s a problem.

Learning to drive safely takes skill, patience, and professional guidance. A DVSA-approved instructor knows how to structure lessons, spot potential hazards early, and teach you techniques that meet test standards. Unqualified instructors simply don’t offer that same level of safety or expertise.

By checking for the badge before you start your lesson, you’re protecting yourself. You’re ensuring that your time and money are being spent with a professional who’s accountable and trained to DVSA standards.

We’re Proud to Display Ours

At Geoff Capes Driving School, we take pride in doing things properly. Every one of our instructors is fully qualified and DVSA-approved, and we always display our green or pink badges clearly in the car — as required by law.

It’s our way of showing that we’re transparent, trustworthy, and committed to giving every learner the best possible experience behind the wheel.

Drive with Confidence

Before you book your next driving lesson — with us or anyone else — take a moment to “spot the badge.” It’s a small step that makes a big difference.

With Geoff Capes Driving School, you can be sure your instructor is qualified, professional, and dedicated to helping you become a safe, confident driver for life.
