The rules changed in 2018 and learner drivers are now allowed on the motorway. Motorways can seem quite intimidating for many learner drivers. But the experience does mean that you improve your skills and prepare for driving once you have passed your test.
A learner driver must be accompanied by an approved driving instructor. For safety reasons learner drivers are only allowed onto a motorway if they are with an approved DVSA driving instructor. The vehicle must be fitted with dual controls and clearly display L plates.
Learner drivers do not have to drive on the motorway and it’s up to them and their driving instructors to decide if they are ready to. Whilst it isn’t essential getting the experience with a qualified instructor helps learner drivers have a better understanding of how to safely drive at speeds and in that situation. Learners may wish to practice on dual carriageways first as there are some similarities.
Your instructor will provide training on how to enter and exit a motorway, change and use lanes, overtake correctly and help to boost your confidence and skills.
Motorway driving skills are not part of the current practical driving test. But learning the skills required for safely driving on them with a qualified instructor will help you to broaden your experience and ensure that you feel comfortable to safely drive on the motorways once you have passed your test. Speak to your instructor if you would like to know more about motorway driving lessons.
