Learning to Drive Later in Life

When people mention driving lessons, they assume that nearly all students will have just passed their 17th birthday. However, while teenagers and people in their early 20s do make up a large proportion of the learners we have, there are many people who leave it until a little later in life to start learning.

People put off learning to drive for many reasons, they don’t think it’s for them, they tried and it didn’t work out or finances may not have allowed them to learn before. Whatever the reason we have helped many learners who have left it until their 30s, 40s, 50s and beyond to learn to drive.

Starting driving lessons can be daunting at any age and there is no reason why, if you are starting lessons later in life that you wont become a safe competent driver. Passing your driving test at any age is life changing it can open new job opportunities, provide social benefits and generally make life much easier.  It truly is life changing! You will not have to rely on public transport or wait for friends or family to give you a lift.

All our driving instructors deliver lessons in a pupil-centred way, which means that everything is based on your individual learning style. Some people find learning later in life makes it easier and they pass quickly but it doesn’t matter if you find some elements of learning more difficult than others, or if you are very nervous. We will work with you to make sure that you master the skills and enjoy your lessons and driving. If you have had a bad experience learning to drive before talk to your instructor so they can understand and help to resolve any issues.

Advice for learning to drive later in life

Do it, don’t get discouraged or worry about what other people think, do it for you and your independence.

Drivers who learn and pass their test later in life are often more cautious and they, therefore, become safe drivers, meaning that you are less likely to have an accident. One of the most common mistakes made during a driving test is not making enough observations or checking mirrors enjoy, those who learn later in life are often better at making these checks.

Driving an automatic car is simpler as you don’t have to worry about the gears and it gives you more time to concentrate on your driving and hazard perception.
