Learning to drive and passing your driving test is a life changing event for most people. It is exciting and some people might feel nervous, which is normal. Being able to drive will give you many more opportunities in both your career and personal life. It is a brilliant skill to have giving you a real feeling of independence.
However excited or nervous you are your driving instructor will help to put you at your ease. Below we have put together some information to give you an idea of what you can expect on your first driving lesson.
How to prepare for your first lesson
Being prepared for your first lesson will help calm any nerves you may have. We suggest that you wear some comfortable clothes and suitable shoes, ideally with a flat sole. Ensure that if you need glasses that you have them with you. You will also need to bring your provisional driving licence to prove that you are entitled to drive, if you have not already applied for your licence you can do so here.
What to expect on your first driving lesson
Whilst you may be nervous about your first lesson, your instructor will help you and will work with you at your pace. Normally, your instructor will take you to a quiet road before giving you an overview of the controls, gears, mirrors etc.
Whether you are taking your first driving lessons in Hyde, Stockport, Macclesfield, Glossop or elsewhere you will not be expected to tackle busy, bustling roads or the town centre. Your first lessons while you build your skills and confidence will be on quieter residential streets.
Once you are familiar with the controls your driving instructor will then explain about gears, clutch control and finding the biting point, signalling, and checking your mirrors and blind spots as well as stopping the car. Then when you are ready and comfortable you will be able to start the car and move off.
At the end of your lesson
At the end of your first lessons your instructor will drop you back at a prearranged point, provide feedback and have a chat with you about how you found the lesson. If you haven’t already done so you can also book your next lesson, ideally this should be within a week of your first one to help you maintain momentum so you can progress quickly.
